Lamps tips Torres to triumph

Frank Lampard believes Fernando Torres will start to show his true colours now that he is off the mark.

The £50million striker finally broke his scoring duck for Chelsea on Saturday when he notched in a 3-0 victory over West Ham.

The Spaniard had gone more than 15 hours without a goal for club and country prior to that strike, with an uncharacteristic drought rocking his confidence.

The sense of relief around Stamford Bridge when he netted against the Hammers was almost tangible, with his jubilant team-mates as pleased to see Torres on target as the Blues' expectant fan base.

"It was always going to be a matter of time and I think now you're going to see him fly, whether it be the last few games of this season or next season."
Frank Lampard Quotes of the week

Lampard was among those to join in the celebrations and he is confident that Chelsea's costly frontman will now shake off his shackles and justify his hefty price tag.

"A world-class striker comes with a massive price tag," said Lampard, who opened the scoring against the Hammers.

"You can't change quality and you can't change a world-class player. We've seen it with him in his career and nothing changes.

"He's a quiet lad, he's not opened his mouth. If he's been on the bench, he's come on and not said anything.

"It was always going to be a matter of time and I think now you're going to see him fly, whether it be the last few games of this season or next season."

Torres' long-awaited effort helped to keep Chelsea's title hopes alive, with the club six points adrift of league leaders Manchester United with four games of the season remaining.

It would be some achievement for the Blues to pip the Red Devils to the post, but Lampard believes anything is still possible - especially as Carlo Ancelotti's still have to go to Old Trafford.

He said: "We can only win the title if we win all our games and Manchester United drop points.

"They're in the driving seat and we can only do what we can do and that includes going to Manchester United.

"We've got a huge game against Tottenham next week. If we can win that then Manchester United might slip up against Arsenal. Then we can do it.

"We've got to keep our heads straight and keep doing our own thing."
