Welbeck called into England squad

The 20-year-old forward, who is on loan at the Black Cats from Manchester United, joins the squad in place of the injured Spurs winger Aaron Lennon. Lennon felt a twinge in his hamstring after England training on Monday. England boss Fabio Capello is expected to make "about seven changes" to the team which beat Wales on Saturday.

Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry will captain the side after newly-appointed skipper John Terry was one of six players rested for the first international fixture against the Black Stars. Terry's fellow Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole have also been released, as well as Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and Tottenham's Michael Dawson.

Aston Villa's Kyle Walker returned to his club with an injury problem. Welbeck scored a fine goal for the England Under-21s in their 4-0 win over Denmark on Thursday, but was then released from the squad by boss Stuart Pearce before their 2-1 defeat by Iceland on Monday night.

He has had a good season for Sunderland, scoring six times including a goal during the memorable 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but he was hit by a knee injury in January. If Welbeck does feature for England, he could come up against Sunderland team-mate Asamoah Gyan, who is set to play up front for Ghana.

Capello said on Monday that he would start with Liverpool striker Andy Carroll and would also select Manchester City keeper Joe Hart in goal with Everton's Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Bolton's Gary Cahill in defence. The Italian also indicated West Ham midfielder Scott Parker would play if he shrugged off a minor injury, following a sure-footed display in the 2-0 win over Wales in Cardiff last weekend.

Welbeck earns Capello call

The Manchester United player has scored six Premier League goals during his temporary move to the Stadium of Light and that form has been recognised by Fabio Capello. England look set to name as many as 11 changes against Ghana at a sold-out Wembley in a completely new team to that which defeated Wales in Euro 2012 qualifying last weekend.

Liverpool's £35million striker, Andy Carroll, is set to lead the line and Welbeck is therefore expected to feature on the bench and could make his senior team debut as a substitute. Welbeck has made 10 appearances for England's Under 21s, scoring three goals, but was not involved on Monday night, when Stuart Pearce's side suffered a disappointing defeat to Iceland.

The 20-year-old was excused from duty because he only recently returned from the injury which caused him to miss the majority of January and all of February at club level. But Capello has decided to call Welbeck, who scored in last week's U21 4-0 win over Denmark, into his senior squad.

Welbeck recently told the Newcastle Chronicle that his involvement with the U21s was important to him, despite the decision to not be involved against Iceland. He said: "I enjoy being part of the England U21s and I don't like missing games.

"It is fantastic to get picked for your country at any level and pulling on the Three Lions shirt means a lot to me. I'm at the stage of my career where I'm trying to make a name for myself. Coming to Sunderland this season is part of that and playing for the England U21s is another part of that - my performances for the U21s actually helped me get noticed in the first place."

Welbeck to decide on future

Sunderland loan star Danny Welbeck has confirmed he will be considering his Manchester United future in the summer.

The 20-year-old striker has proven a big hit at the Stadium of Light this season during his season-long loan spell from The Red Devils.

The England Under-21 international has enjoyed regular first-team football under manager Steve Bruce and feels the experience has boosted his game.

Welbeck has now hinted that his long-term future could lie away from Old Trafford as the prospect of returning to training without playing games is highly unappealing.

"I've not really thought too much about what I'm going to do, but I've really enjoyed my time at Sunderland," said Welbeck.

"It has benefited me massively, just to be around with the big boys week in, week out. I'm delighted with that, but the end of the season will be the time to sit down and think about the future.

"I'm like anyone else, I want to play every week. Football is my job. I like training hard and then playing in games, but we will just see what happens in the summer."
