Wenger left deflated after late defeat

Arsene Wenger has accepted Arsenal have little chance of winning the title now as they sit nine points behind Manchester United with four games to play.

Arsenal fell behind to a Daniel Sturridge goal in the first half, but the game looked to be turning in their favour after the break when Kevin Davies missed a penalty before Robin van Persie levelled the scores.

However, the Gunners were unable to take their chances and were punished late on when Tamir Cohen headed home the winner for Bolton.

"It's hard to lose a game like that," Wenger told Sky Sports. "We gave everything. Our attitude was fantastic. We were 1-0 down and had chances to win it.

"We have to give as much as we can until the last game, but of course the chances are minimal now. The players fought very hard and the players are disappointed."

It was another frustrating match for Arsenal, whose form since the Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham has cost them dear.

Over the last week, Arsenal have conceded leads to both Liverpool and Tottenham but, despite this latest setback, Wenger is not considering drastic changes.

"I feel this week we could have taken nine points and we have taken two," he said. "We do not have to change our way of playing.

"I feel we have to be more mature in some situations when we are looking too frail. If you look at the way we dropped points it makes it even more frustrating."

Bolton boss Owen Coyle said the victory was important as the players felt the need to make amends for the 5-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Stoke in their last outing.

"The boys have been magnificent all season," he said. "We had one terrible, horrible day last week when everything that could go wrong went wrong.

"We didn't feel great about ourselves and that will stay with me till the day I die, but today I think everybody has seen the true Bolton.

"Every one of them worked their socks off. I'm absolutely delighted to get the late winner."

Sturridge added: "We're just delighted to come out here and work hard. After last week's result we wanted to come here and show the fans we had the passion.

"A lot of fans were very unhappy with last week - we did this for the fans today."

After his winner, Cohen unveiled a T-shirt bearing an image of his father, Avi, who died in December after a motorbike accident.

"I came on to protect the 1-1," Cohen said. "I am very happy to score this goal - it's been a very emotional season for me. I am happy we won and collected another three points."

Copa del Rey unharmed after horror fall

Mourinho thanks critics

The cup slipped from Ramos' grasp as Madrid celebrated their 1-0 victory over Barcelona on Wednesday night, and footage showed it was caught under the front wheel of the coach. However, Ramos told Telemadrid: "The cup fell, it fell, but the cup is in good shape."

Ramos also hailed Jose Mourinho after he got the better of Barcelona to deliver his first piece of silverware to the club.

"Mourinho is the captain of our ship and we are with him to the death. What he is trying to instil in us is working wonderfully."

Barca president Sandro Rosell, meanwhile, feels there is cause for pride despite the defeat to their arch-rivals.

"We're not going away with our hands empty," he said on the club's official website. "We can take away plenty of pride, having played some great football. I am happy because of what the players have done and especially for the fans, who set a great example.

"Now we have to think about the next game and then the Champions League. We have to finish off the league and then press on. Barca is a very great institution and we'll get over this."

La Liga strike cancelled after court ruling

La Liga will go ahead as planned this weekend after a Madrid court ruled in favour of the clubs seeking to call off a strike.

The Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional (LFP) had suspended the fixtures in the Primera Division this weekend due to a row over television rights to games, with a majority of clubs unhappy with the law that states that one match per round of fixtures must be shown on free-to-air television.

Those clubs had been eager to maximise revenue from pay TV channels, and had hoped that a strike would pressurise the Spanish government into changing the law.

However, six clubs - Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Sevilla and Villarreal - had appealed against the proposed strike action and, on Wednesday morning, a court ruled in their favour.

A statement from the court read: "The court decides the official calendar for the first and second divisions should remain unaltered for the next round of matches."

Judge Purificacion Pujol added: "The league calendar cannot be changed."

The LFP accepted the judge's ruling but said: "Despite the internal discrepancies within the LFP over the measures adopted at the assembly on February 11, all the clubs that make up the league continue to press their demands on the government.

"From now on, a new road map will be established that will allow us to unlock the talks in our search for solutions to the grievances of professional football compared to other sectors of the Spanish economy."

Villarreal general manager Jose Manuel Llaneza is convinced the outcome will be to the benefit of the game.

"The strike would have been a stab in the heart of football," he told Radio Marca. "Football only sells hope and, if we kill people's illusions, we will kill football."

He added: "There are no winners or losers. The big winner is football."

Atletico Madrid did not appeal the decision, but club president Enrique Cerezo said the strike would have been a "nonsense" and added in Marca: "I sensed that the games were going to be played. Imagine what would have happened. Luckily, everything has been solved."

Johan Djourou out at least four weeks after surgery on dislocated shoulder

23 Mar 2011 - 08:56:52

Defender Johan Djourou will start training again in as little as four weeks after Arsenal confirmed he does not need reconstructive surgery on his dislocated shoulder. The Switzerland international suffered the injury in the Gunners' FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester United and there were fears initially he could miss the rest of the season. But after exploratory surgery the club announced he will be able to return sooner than expected. Flat out: Djourou was in obvious agony when he hit the deck during Arsenal's defeat at Old Trafford A statement on the club's website read: 'Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has undergone exploratory surgery on his dislocated shoulder, sustained at Old Trafford in the recent FA Cup fixture against Manchester United. 'The club can confirm the positive news that there isn't a need for reconstructive surgery and he will now begin a period of rehabilitation on the shoulder before returning to training in around a month.' Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny could also be back in action for the climax of Arsenal's Premier League title bid. Szczesny is set for another scan on his injured hand at the start of April, which if all goes well could see the young Pole in contention for what is set to be a crunch showdown with Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on May 1. Pain in Spain: Gunners keeper Szczesny injured his hand against Barcelona in the Champions League The 20-year-old has had his finger placed in a protective splint since suffering the freak injury when saving a free-kick against Barcelona in their Champions League clash at the Nou Camp earlier this month. 'There is not a lot of joint damage, the tendon is ruptured, so basically I have to keep my finger in a splint for four weeks and let the tendon heal,' Szczesny told Arsenal TV Online. 'From then it will be a couple of weeks before I can be back in the squad. 'It is very hard, especially at a time when it was going well for me, but there is nothing you can do when it happens - you have to move on, work hard on your fitness and make sure you come back stronger than ever.' Szczesny's injury led to veteran Jens Lehmann making a shock return to his old club and it remains to be seen whether the German will be chosen ahead of Manuel Almunia for the Gunners' next game following the Spaniard's blunder against West Bromwich.  Arsenal rocked by fresh takeover fears at Usmanov increases stake in clubArsenal are in safe hands, insists Almunia - despite keeper's clangerFabregas returns to training to hand ailing Arsenal timely tonic in title raceWilshere warns Arsenal they must stop 'sloppy' showings to reel in UnitedAll the latest Arsenal news, features and opinion  Explore more:People: Johan Djourou Places: Switzerland
