Richard Dunne ‘targeted by Liverpool and Manchester United after Villa row’
Richard Dunne’s recent off-field bust-up with Aston Villa coaching staff has caught the attention of Liverpool and Manchester United, with both clubs said to be considering launching bids to sign the Irish defender in the summer.
Dunne has had two very public bust-up’s at Villa, the most recent coming after drunken antics during a team bonding exercise. Both Dunne and teammate James Collins were fined two-weeks wages for the incident which happened at a training camp in Leicestershire. Late last year, Dunne almost came to blows with coach Gary McAllister over a disagreement over tactics. The Republic of Ireland international may be wayward of late, but a guiding hand could come from either Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool or Sir Alex Ferguson at United. With an injury crisis striking at the heart of Manchester United’s defence, Dunne could be a perfect stop-gap for the club as he nears his peak. At 31-years of age, Dunne brings with him a wealth of experience, but also a tough tackling mentality which both managers will appreciate.

Richard Dunne ‘nears his peak’? At age 31? Not sure we could agree with that, or for that matter that Liverpool and Manchester United would be looking to sign the Irish international veteran. There is no doubting that on his day the former Everton and Man City man has the ability, and determination, to make an impact but he is also very capable, increasingly so, of making big errors.

Given that Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to freshen up his side and looking to replace the ageing members of his Old Trafford squad, a move for the Dublin born defender seems hugely unlikely. Man United have the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as first choice starters and Jonny Evans and the impressive Chris Smalling as back-ups, if they do opt for a new signing it would surely be for a player significantly younger than Dunne.

Liverpool too would surely be looking only to decrease the average age of a back four that already has to oldies in the likes of Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. Kenny Dalglish also has the very capable talents of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger to call upon.

Clearly Gerard Houllier and Richard Dunne have clashed and that may well lead to the no nonsense defender being sold but a move to either Anfield or the Premier League table toppers simply will never happen.
